Tucked away behind the splendid Castle Pub on Tooting High Street lies an unexpected culinary surprise. A replica of the Great British Bake Off tent where anyone can put their baking skills to the test.
The tent was really authentically decorated and arranged
On arrival, we were greeted by the friendly team lead by Rochelle, Tooting’s answer to Marry Berry. After splitting into pairs, we were confronted with ready-weighed and measured ingredients and a mercifully easy to follow method.
My baking partner rolling the pastry like a pro
We were given 90 minutes to produce our masterpiece, which felt like about 20, the time whistling by in a blur of custard, pastry and compote. The Big London Bake team were always on hand to lend some advice to the absolute novices in the group like myself.
Our masterpiece: a peppermint and white chocolate custard tart
Making a large tart to take home and a little version for tasting, we presented our offerings on the gingham altar for Rochelle’s final judgement.
All the offerings, with mini versions for the judge to taste
You could cut the tension with a palate knife as she read out the top 3. We managed a creditable second place, but everyone celebrated at the end that they managed to produce something edible.
Rhianna and I with our creation
The Big London Bake is a great evening out and would be perfect for couples, friends or larger groups looking for something different, fun and beautifully sweet.
